Northport Village Flupsy

Exciting things are happening here in Northport. Today NNGI had the pleasure of attending the official kick off of the Northport Harbor FLUPSY. This program was brought to Northport by our very own Mercy Smith in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension. Her hard work is being continued by Trustee Dave Weber.

This special dock draws in bay water and grows oyster seeds into small oysters which will be released into the bay. Adult oysters can filter over 40 gallons of water per day helping to remove things such as nitrogen which can upset the balance of bay ecosystem and cause algal blooms and fish kills.

The health of our harbor depends on all of our residents working together to limit fertilizer, plant native gardens to reduce runoff, and fund programs like our FLUPSY.

In that spirit, NNGI hosted a successful fundraising event. NNGI matched donations to the FLUPSY fund for a total of $750 collected. We are so grateful to the NNGI community for their support of this vital effort.

Please consider making future donations to the Northport FLUPSY project.  This project helps to clean our harbor.  It is privately funded and can not continue without donations from the community.  To find out more on how to donate you can send an email to the contact below.
