Ater enjoying the colors, smells and structure of all of your summer-blooming natives, you will be happy to know that autumn does not mean that gardening season is over. The Fall is a perfect time for adding natives. Here is why:

1. Native plants lengthen your garden’s bloom time:

Let’s face it, conventional gardens planted with annuals tend to look a little droopy and tired this time of year. Luckily there are native plants that are just coming into their own, exploding with vibrant color. Think asters, goldenrod, ironweed and native sunflowers!

We also love how native plants add so much interest beyond blooms. Native grasses really shine this time of year, with their interesting foliage and delicate fronds. Definitely think about incorporating some of these wonders onto your property.

2. Native plants provide food for migrating Monarchs!

Flowering native perennials such as asters and goldenrods serve as way-stations of food and nectar for the last generation of Monarch butterflies as they make their way south.

3. Fall is an ideal time to plant natives:

Unlike many conventional plants, native plants do very well with fall planting as they can handle the cooling temperatures. Putting natives in before the winter helps them to establish their long root systems which in turn helps them to thrive in the drier days of summer. Don’t forget about our native trees - plant them now!
